A small step for garden kind

So the easiest patch of garden to re-haul is also the smallest. It is just a tiny strip of marble chips mixed in with garbage to help the water hose drain. I dug up everything out of there and painstakingly sorted through the white marble chips from the garbage. The garbage was 10 years worth of cigarettes, rusty nails, dead leaves, a lost earring. random plastic bits and a vortex to planet Zoran.

Before. Fugly.

Next I hosed the dirt off the marble chips and put them in a bucket with water and a tiny bit of bleach overnight. Since I was broke-o joke-o at the time I planted some random plants that were growing from the trees and base of shrubs from around my neighborhood. I figured since the HOA garden dudes weed wack these plants down anyways then it was okay for me to claim my free plants. I don't know what it is except as what I call it, "The Purple One."

My mom also has an unidentified green plant that we don't know the species of, except for the fact that it could withstand a nuclear fallout. Seriously. This thing doesn't die. It has been lovingly nicknamed "The Georgettes." If anyone can put a name to this plant please comment below. I'd love to know what it actually is aside from Fallout 3 Georgette.

I rinsed off the marble chips, added soil back in, planted several Georgettes and The Purple One in alternating order and gave everything a nice drink of water. Everything has had time to grow out for about 2 months now.

Tomorrow I will post the results.

Plants.....more plants! Mwah ha ha ha!

Today I stopped by at home depot and picked a gigantic bag of miracle grow moisture control. I'm hoping it will help with the heat of summer drying out my seedling containers. I also bought Jiffy 72 Cell Pro-Hex Seed Starting Tray and several seed packets.

Today I planted:
Sunflower (evening sun)
Sunflower (autumn beauty mixed)
Watermelon ( crimson sweet)
Watermelon (heirloom seeds Georgia rattlesnake)
Beans (bush blue lake, 247)
Lettuce (giant Caesar)

Get your green thumb on!

My name is Rachael but you can call me Moo.

I have created this awesomesauce blog as a way to track the growth of my garden chronologically. I hope that sharing my garden publicly will help inspire, learn, and enjoy simple nature.  My ultimate goal is to transform an ugly town home patio into a beautiful butterfly oasis.

Fugly.

I have yet to try gardening in Zone 10b (think swamp) and look forward to enjoying year round tropical blooming weather offset by battling swarms of pests, poor soil quality, extreme heat and damp conditions.

Follow my journey through trials and tribulations as I bumble my way through the world of gardening.
